Home information: Harriet is growing up in the village of Bugoi in rural northeastern Uganda. Her family resides in Alau B, a small community within Bugoi. Harriet lives with her mother and has four sisters and five brothers. Her father passed away. Her family supports themselves by “digging”—they grow potatoes, beans, and other vegetables to eat and to sell at market when they can. Harriet helps at home by cooking and fetching firewood.
School information: Harriet is in grade 2 at the Bugoi Haven of Hope Nursery and Primary School, where she has been a student since 2017. Her teachers report that she is a humble, well-behaved, and creative girl who enjoys socializing with her classmates. Sponsorship will fund her continued education and care.
Village information: In Bugoi, most people live in small groupings of mud huts with thatched roofs and depend on small-scale farming or gardening to feed themselves. This is often made difficult by drought, which can lead to poor harvests and famine. Families tend to be large, and many adults care for orphans in addition to their biological children. Disease, including HIV and AIDS, is common and has left many children without one or both of their parents. Poverty also keeps many children from attending school, as families struggle to meet their basic needs and afford school fees.
Prayer requests: Harriet asks for prayer to complete school.
Currently, Harriet's grade 2 class is home from school due to coronavirus restrictions in Uganda. She is expected to return in June. Until then, sponsorship will support her continued studies at home (as her school facilitates home learning) and will provide her with food and any needed medical care.
