Home information: Joan is growing up in the village of Bugoi in rural northeastern Uganda. Her family resides in Imakioroch, a small community within Bugoi. Joan lives with her aunt and uncle, who serves as a pastor, and several cousins. Her mother is alive but lives elsewhere. Joan’s family supports themselves by “digging”—they grow cassava, maize, and millet to eat and to sell at market when they can. However, they struggle to meet all of their needs, including school fees for the children. Joan helps at home by fetching water and washing. Her most immediate need is education.
School information: Joan was able to attend a local primary school through grade 4, but her family has been struggling to continue her education. Sponsorship will enable her to attend the Bugoi Haven of Hope Nursery and Primary School, where she joined grade 5 in February 2020. In Uganda, nursery school lasts for three years and is followed by seven years of primary school and six years of secondary school. At school, Joan will learn and play, be taught about God, and receive meals and medical care. Her cousins Apila Sarah and Idao Jane Faith also attend the Haven of Hope school through sponsorship, and Joan has been excited to go to school with them.
Village information: In Bugoi, most people live in small groupings of mud huts with thatched roofs and depend on small-scale farming or gardening to feed themselves. This is often made difficult by drought, which can lead to poor harvests and famine. Families tend to be large, and many adults care for orphans in addition to their biological children. Disease, including HIV and AIDS, is common and has left many children without one or both of their parents. Poverty also keeps many children from attending school, as families struggle to meet their basic needs and afford school fees.
Prayer requests: Joan asks for prayer to continue her education.
