Home information: Evelyn is growing up in the city of Ndola in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. She lives with her mother and father and has one brother and two sisters. Their family shares a small rented house, and Evelyn’s mother supports them by working as a house maid. However, it is difficult for her parents to meet all of their needs.
School information: Evelyn attended the Haven of Hope primary school in Ndola through grade 7 and then advanced to a nearby government-run secondary school, where she is currently in grade 9. In Zambia, secondary school lasts for five years, ending with grade 12. Evelyn’s school reports that her academic performance and behavior are very good. Through sponsorship, she will continue to receive an education, school supplies and uniform, medical care, food, and discipleship.
Community information: Haven of Hope's students in Ndola live in a number of compounds (densely populated communities). Evelyn’s compound is called Pamodzi Overspill. In the compounds, unemployment and poverty rates are high, and people primarily depend on menial jobs for survival—working, for example, as garden hands, maids, and small-scale farmers. Families tend to be large and live in small houses. The compounds have been greatly afflicted by HIV and AIDS, leaving many children without one or both of their biological parents. Orphaned children are often cared for by their grandparents, aunts, or uncles; other children live in child-headed homes. Most families struggle to meet their basic needs and afford an education for their children. The language spoken by our students at home and in their community is Bemba, but they also learn English at school.
Prayer requests: Please pray that Evelyn will continue to do well in her studies.
