Home information: Given is growing up in the city of Ndola in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. She lives with her grandmother, Justina, and has one brother and three sisters. Their mother is alive but lives elsewhere. It is difficult for Given’s grandmother to meet all of the family’s needs.
School information: Given attends the Haven of Hope primary school in Ndola, where she is currently in grade 7. After passing grade 7, our students advance to local government-run secondary schools to continue their education through grade 12. Given has struggled in school for the past few years, but her teachers report that she has recently been improving and that she has good behavior. Through sponsorship, she will continue to receive an education, school supplies and uniform, medical care, food, and discipleship.
Community information: Haven of Hope's students in Ndola live in a number of compounds (densely populated communities). Given’s compound is called Nkwazi Overspill. In the compounds, unemployment and poverty rates are high, and people primarily depend on menial jobs for survival—working, for example, as garden hands, maids, and small-scale farmers. Families tend to be large and live in small houses. The compounds have been greatly afflicted by HIV and AIDS, leaving many children without one or both of their biological parents. Orphaned children are often cared for by their grandparents, aunts, or uncles; other children live in child-headed homes. Most families struggle to meet their basic needs and afford an education for their children. The language spoken by our students at home and in their community is Bemba, but they also learn English at school.
Prayer requests: Please pray that Given will continue to grow academically.
