Home information: Travise is growing up in the rural town of Luanshya in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. He lives with his grandmother, three sisters, and cousins. His parents are alive but often away, working in another city to support the family. Travise enjoys going to church with his family every Sunday.
School information: Travise attended the Haven of Haven of Hope Luanshya Primary School through grade 7. Upon advancing to grade 8 this year, he transferred to a nearby government-run secondary school to continue his education. His teachers have reported that he is a hard-working and well-behaved student. Travise needs a new sponsor to support his ongoing education and physical care through grade 12.
Community information: Haven of Hope's students live in a number of compounds (densely populated communities). Travise’s family resides in the Mikomfwa compound in Luanshya. It is one of the most populous local areas, with high rates of unemployment and illiteracy. People there primarily depend on menial jobs for survival—working, for example, as garden hands, maids, and small-scale farmers. Most families live in small mud houses. Families tend to be large, with a lot of children depending on unemployed parents, or on relatives in the absence of their parents. The compound has been greatly afflicted by HIV and AIDS, leaving most children without one or both of their biological parents. Alcoholism is also a problem within many households. Poverty has kept most families struggling to meet their basic needs and afford school fees for their children.
Prayer requests: Travise asks for prayer that he will continue to do well in school.
*Please note* Costs for our secondary students (grades 8-12) in Zambia are higher due to increased tuition at that level. The sponsorship fee for Travise is our regular $35 per month, plus $10 once a year for the birthday celebration. However, we invite sponsors of secondary students to increase their monthly contribution by a few dollars ($3, $5, $10, or any amount), should they wish, to help us fully cover costs. This is entirely voluntary, but the option will be extended when you pay Travise's sponsorship fees.
